ZIP codes within a radius

Type a ZIP code, search a town or click the map, set the radius in miles or kilometres, and the tool lists every US ZIP code whose Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area point lies inside the circle, nearest first, with place, state and distance. Distances are geodesic, accurate to well under a metre from the point; the ZIP area itself can reach past the circle. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Or click on the map to place the centre. Drag the centre or the round handle on the edge to adjust.

Need a shapefile? Convert the GeoJSON to a shapefile on FileReshape.

Map and data: OpenFreeMap, MapLibre GL JS, GeographicLib (geographiclib-geodesic), US Census Bureau ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTA) Gazetteer, GeoNames postal codes (via zipcodes-us), GeoNames (via all-the-cities) – all data sources.

A ZIP radius search answers questions like "which ZIP codes are within 25 miles of our store?", "which areas does a 10-mile delivery zone cover?" or "where should this mailing go?". Pick the centre in the way that suits you: type a five-digit ZIP code, search for a town, or click anywhere on the map. Set the radius and the circle is drawn on the map with an orange dot for every ZIP code inside it, while the panel lists the codes from the nearest to the farthest, each with its place name, state and distance from the centre. Drag the centre or the handle on the edge of the circle to try another zone, and the list follows. When the list is right, copy the codes as one comma-separated line for a spreadsheet, an ad campaign or a form, download them as CSV with the coordinates and distances, or as GeoJSON with the circle for a GIS. The share link keeps the centre and the radius, so a colleague sees exactly the same list.

    How to use it

    1. Type a ZIP code and press Go, search a town, or click the map where the centre should be.
    2. Type the radius and choose miles or kilometres, or drag the round handle on the edge of the circle.
    3. Read the list of ZIP codes, nearest first, with place, state and distance.
    4. Copy the codes, download them as CSV or GeoJSON, or copy the share link.

    How accurate is it?

ZIP codes are routes, not areas

The Postal Service draws ZIP codes as delivery routes, not as areas with borders, so there is no official map of them. The Census Bureau builds ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) from census blocks to approximate them, and this tool uses the about 33,800 ZCTAs from the 2020 census geography. Each ZCTA has an internal point, a spot inside the area near its middle, published by the Census Bureau, and that point is what the distance is measured to.

What "within the radius" means here

A ZIP code is listed when its internal point lies inside the circle. A large rural ZIP whose point is just outside is left out even though part of it reaches in, and a ZIP that is listed may stretch beyond the edge. For a hard boundary, such as a legal service area, check the ZIP codes near the edge on the map. Distances from the centre to each point are calculated on the WGS84 ellipsoid with GeographicLib, so the circle and the distances are exact; the uncertainty is in what a single point says about a whole ZIP area.

Codes that are not in the list

ZIP codes used only for post office boxes, single large organisations or military mail have no ZCTA, because no one lives in them, so they never appear. ZIP codes created after 2020 are missing too, and a few ZCTAs have no place name in the GeoNames list; they are shown with the code only. The data covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

    Good to know

Straight-line distance is not driving distance

The radius is measured as the crow flies. A ZIP code 10 miles away across a bay or a mountain range can be an hour's drive. For delivery zones and service areas, use the radius as a first cut and check travel times separately.

The centre of a ZIP code is a point, too

When you start from a ZIP code, the centre is that ZIP's internal point, not your address. For a store or a warehouse, click its exact position on the map instead, so the distances start from the right place.

    Very large radii

The radius is limited to 500 miles. Around a big city 100 miles can already hold more than a thousand ZIP codes; the panel shows the nearest 500 and the downloads contain all of them.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I find all ZIP codes within 10 miles of a ZIP code?

Type the ZIP code in the first box and press Go, make sure the radius says 10 miles, and the list shows every ZIP code whose area point lies within 10 miles, with the distance to each.

Can I copy the ZIP codes into Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. "Copy ZIP codes" copies them as one comma-separated line. For one code per row with place, state and distance, download the CSV and open it in the spreadsheet.

Why is a ZIP code next door missing from the list?

Either its internal point lies outside the circle, which happens with large rural ZIP codes, or it is a PO box or business ZIP code that has no ZCTA. Increase the radius a little or look at the dots on the map.

Does it work outside the United States?

No. ZIP codes are a US system and the list holds the US ZCTAs. For any country, the radius map draws a circle and the distance calculator measures to any point.

Is the distance in miles or kilometres?

Miles by default; switch the unit to kilometres and the radius, the list and the CSV use kilometres. The CSV also has the distance in metres.
