GeoDrafter Coordinate Finder and Converter for QGIS

GeoDrafter Coordinate Finder and Converter is a free QGIS plugin with a panel that shows the position you click in the map CRS, a CRS of your choice, decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds, degrees-decimal-minutes, UTM and MGRS. Any value can be copied, and a Go to field takes the same formats, centres the map on the position and marks it. It runs on QGIS 4 and QGIS 3.40.

Install

GeoDrafter Coordinate Finder and Converter is being tested in QGIS 4 before it is released in the official QGIS plugin catalogue. When it is approved, it can be installed in QGIS from Plugins ▸ Manage and Install Plugins by searching for “GeoDrafter Coordinate Finder and Converter”.

What it does

Pick a position on the map, or let the panel follow the mouse, and the table shows it in seven ways at once: the project's map CRS, a second CRS you choose (it is remembered), WGS84 as decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds and degrees-decimal-minutes, UTM with the zone and latitude band, and MGRS. The UTM zone is chosen automatically, including the special zones around Norway and Svalbard, and MGRS is truncated to 1 m as the standard requires.

The Go to field works the other way round. Type or paste a coordinate in any of those formats – with N/S/E/W letters, degree signs or decimal commas, a UTM reference like 32V 552000 6320000 or an MGRS reference like 32V NJ 52000 20000 – and press Enter. The map centres on the position and marks it, and the message bar says how the text was read. Two plain numbers are read in the CRS you have chosen.

Copying coordinates

Double click a row, or select it and press Ctrl+C, to copy one value; right click for Copy all. If you collect many positions, On pick copies a chosen format with every click, so you can click on the map and paste straight into a spreadsheet or report. To convert a whole list of coordinates, the panel links to the GeoDrafter coordinate converter in the browser, which uses the same calculations.

How to use it

  1. Click Coordinate Finder on the Plugins toolbar, or choose Plugins ▸ GeoDrafter ▸ Coordinate Finder, to open the panel.
  2. Click Pick on map and click on the map; turn on Follow mouse to update while you move. Right click or Esc stops.
  3. Choose a second CRS in the panel if you need one, and copy values with a double click or Ctrl+C.
  4. To find a position, type it in the Go to field and press Enter.

Requirements

The plugin needs QGIS 3.40 or newer, including QGIS 4.x, and works in any project coordinate system. The plugin sends nothing anywhere and has no telemetry.

Questions

Which coordinate formats can I type in Go to?

Two numbers in the chosen CRS (latitude, longitude when it is geographic), decimal degrees with N/S/E/W, degrees-minutes-seconds, degrees-decimal-minutes, UTM with zone and latitude band, and MGRS with 1 to 5 digits per axis. Anything the panel shows can be pasted back.

Why are UTM and MGRS based on WGS84?

UTM and MGRS references are normally given on WGS84, as GPS receivers use. For a national grid such as ETRS89 / UTM 32N, choose it as the second CRS and read or type the numbers there.

Is it free?

Yes. The plugin is free and open source under the GNU GPL, version 2 or later.
